One of the most demanding and adventurous journeys, the Three Passes Trek combines three iconic high-altitude passes in the Everest region: Renjo La Pass (5,360 m), Cho La Pass (5,420 m), and Kongma La Pass (5,545 m) through the off-beaten routes. It allows you to discover the glacial lakes of Gokyo Valley and enjoy spellbinding panoramas of Mt. Everest and surrounding peaks. It equally offers an authentic glimpse into the life of the Himalayan Sherpa people by letting you indulge in the unique culture and traditions of the Everest region.

This extraordinary 20-day trek officially begins by trekking from Lukla to Phakding; immediately after that, the trail passes through several serene villages, such as Thame, Lungden, Gokyo, Thangnak, Dzongla, Loboche, and Gorakshep, to reach Everest Base Camp. Besides panoramic views of giant hills, lush green forests filled with rhododendrons, pines, oaks, and glaciers; wildlife like colorful pheasants, snow leopards, musk deer, and Himalayan thar can be seen along the way. Thame is home to several brave climbers, including Apa Sherpa, who holds the record for having climbed Everest times. Tenzing Norgay Sherpa had his childhood there and was one of the first climbers to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, alongside Edmund Hillary.

Furthermore, on the way to Gokyo Ri Peak, one of the most notable and outstanding key features is exploring five Gokyo lakes (Thonal Cho, Tanjung Cho, Gyazumpa Cho, Longpanga Cho, and Ngojumba Cho) after Renjo La Pass, which are the world’s highest freshwater lake system and have been designated as a Ramsar (wetland of international importance). The panoramic vistas of Mt. Everest, including Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Makalu, make you forget all the struggle and pain of climbing and head down to Gokyo Valley, nestled on the shore of the third Gokyo Lake (DudhPokhari), after spending a while there.
Traversing Thangnak, you clear the way to Dzongla via Chola Pass, then the journey continues to Gorakshep after Loboche. Following in the footsteps of legendary mountaineers, you will have a sense of great achievement after reaching the base of the highest peak on the planet with panoramic scenery of lush hills, high Himalayan ranges, and glaciers. Moreover, you get a glimpse of the sunrise over Mt. Everest from the Kala Patthar, the highest point of the Three Passes Trek Nepal, which offers an unparalleled and serene atmosphere with thrilling experiences.

The most challenging day is the 14th day of the trek, as you pass the final out of the three passes, which begins from Loboche with an easy route interspersed with frozen lakes to Chhukung via Kongma La Pass (5545 m). The time to conclude the Three Passes Trek is nearer as you trek to Namche Bazar after traversing Tengboche and end your walking to Lukla. Before immersing yourself in the culture, traditions, and lifestyle of Sherpa town, you can explore an ancient monastery in Tengboche, which resembles Buddhism. Along the way, you witness numerous gompas, monasteries, vibrant prayer flags, and Mani walls, which can help you understand histories dating back centuries. In this manner, you officially conclude the trek, reaching Lukla, walking through several suspension bridges, Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and various landmarks, and flying to Kathmandu.

In summation, this Three Pass Trekking is not just a journey through the unique landscapes of the Himalayas; it’s also a demanding and thrilling adventure that rewards incredible experiences for a lifetime with stunning panoramas of the Everest region and the thrill of passing three high-altitude passes. Besides these, you get to one of the best destinations in the Everest Region, Gokyo Valley, and on the EBC.
