Upper Dolpo Trek is a challenging and adventurous journey in Dolpo's pristine region, nestled amid the Tibetan Plateau and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges in the northwest of Nepal. As the name indicates, the trek covers a more isolated and less-traveled upper section of the region that is naturally and culturally rich. Upper Dolpo is a restricted region that requires a special permit, having only been opened to visitors at the end of the 1980s. The major highlight of this thrilling excursion is exploring crystal-clear Shey Phoksundo Lake, the deepest lake in Nepal, renowned for its vivid emerald blue and turquoise water and also culturally significant.

Similarly, other pilgrimage sites, including Shey Gompa and Buddhist temples, make the trek worthwhile. On the way, you have spectacular vistas of Dhaulagiri massifs and other towering snow-covered mountains. Besides these, you can encounter unique Tibetan traditions and cultures, primarily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. While walking through Shey Phoksundo National Park, you may see endangered wildlife and vegetation such as Himalayan tahr, Snow Leopards, Pines, Junipers, Birches, etc. You should know that the living way of Dolpo’s people has been shown in Eric Villa’s film “ Himalaya” and Peter Matthiessen’s book “ The Snow Leopard.”

Since most of the trails are off the beaten route, trekking is the only option to discover them and enjoy unparalleled experiences. During this journey, you pass through some of the most remote and high-altitude settlements on earth. Even above 4000 meters, people lead their normal lives. Your excursion begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, and you spend a day strolling around the city. The next day, the trek of the Upper Dolpo trekking embarks on Juphal after flying from Nepalgunj to it. From here, you continue to walk for 3 to 4 hours to conclude today’s trek at Ankhe.

After traversing mani walls, monasteries, and several quaint villages such as Sulighat and Ringmo Village and crossing suspension bridges,  you arrive at Phoksundo Lake to set up camp with a wonderful scenario. You spend a day here as an acclimatization day and hike back to Ringmo to prepare for further ascents. From here, you reach Sallaghari to spend the night underneath a starry sky and then proceed to Bhanjhyan, walking on a narrower path through a glacial valley. As you continue the hike, you meet the convergence of the Phoksundu River and a stream. On the way, you enjoy a panoramic view of Kang La Pass and Chhamlang Peak.

It’s one of the most challenging yet rewarding journeys, as you reach Shey Gompa to explore more Buddhist monasteries dating back centuries, passing over Kang La Pass (5306 m). From the summit of the pass, you can relish the surreal beauty of the Upper Dolpo and have a sense of achievement in a serene atmosphere. After walking through another spectacular pass, Saldang La (5060 m), you reach Namuna Gaon, where you can witness nomadic tents and encounter more Gompas.

Traversing an ancient route to Tibet with some ascends and descends, you reach the village of Saldang, the biggest village, surrounded by gigantic hills, which is situated in the arid Trans-Himalayan region of Dolpo. Here you can visit Yange Gumpa while staying for the rest on the second acclimatization day. Afterward, you move towards Shibu, where the Chaiba monster, Namdo monastery, chortens, and other features welcome you to explore them. The next destination is Jeng La Phedi, then Tokyo Gaon via Jeng La Pass (45335 m).

After Tokyo Gaon, you arrive in Dho Tara with more descending trails, and the next day head to Tarap Khola. While approaching the destination, the landscape begins to transition from grazing land to alpine woodlands as the elevation lowers. Then, following the Tarap Khola River and its gorge, you reach Khani Gaon, walking on narrower trails. After spending time in a camp with a beautiful backdrop, you make your way to Tarakot, an ancient fortified village that served as the religion’s capital before the establishment of the Gokha dynasty.

After that, you gradually descend to Dunai, then to the small airstrip of Juphal, where you officially conclude the trek of the Upper Dolpa and celebrate with beer and soft drinks in the happiness of the accomplishment of the journey. In the evening, prepare for tomorrow's journey to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu by flying.

In conclusion, Upper Dolpo never disappoints you with the hidden gems of the region, where you can delve into the depth to discover every aspect of the natural, cultural, and adventurous parts. If you are seeking such unmatched wilderness in the pristine region of western Nepal, please grab the opportunity. We are here at Nepal Adventure Trip Pvt.
