Lower Dolpa Trek is a fairly strenuous odyssey in the wild and pristine landmarks of the northwestern region of Nepal. The trail goes mostly through the Shey Phoksundo National Park, the largest trans-Himalayan National Park, established in 1984 to preserve the rare wildlife of the area. The major feature of this journey is to witness the crystal-clear Phoksundo Lake. It is situated at 3611 m, which is the deepest lake in Nepal and famous for its vivid emerald blue. In addition, this excursion provides a singular opportunity to explore the Tibetan-influenced traditions and cultures of the region. While hiking through jaw-dropping terrains, such as alpine meadows and dense forests of pines, you have glimpses of snow-clad mountains on the way.

Lower Dolpo is less traveled than other famous trekking regions and the perfect venture in remote areas for those seeking an isolated odyssey. The journey becomes more exciting as the trail varies from moderate to difficult, including both gradual ascents and descents. This thrilling journey combines authentic cultural exploration with mind-blowing natural charm, making it once in a lifetime.

While walking through the national park, you may encounter unique animals such as the Himalayan tahr, wild yak, snow leopard, blue sheep, red panda, etc. On the other hand, vegetation like pines, junipers, firs, wildflowers, etc. decorate the way and stir your feelings with mesmerizing scenarios. The excursion provides a dive into the rich cultural history of the Indigenous Dolpo community while traversing numerous traditional settlements such as Juphal, Laina Odar, Nawarpani, Sisal, Dho Dharap, Danigar, Yak Kharka, Ringmo, etc., that are preserving their centuries-old cultural heritages and who especially follow Tibetan Buddhism.

Depending on the Lower Dolpo Trek: 17-day itinerary, the journey begins with a scenic flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu, and then the next day it continues to Juphal by flying from there and reaching Dunai, the headquarters of Dolpo, walking through serene landmarks for 3 to 4 hours. Before leaving for Lingdo, you explore vibrant markets and ancient monasteries in Dunai. The odyssey becomes more exhilarating with jaw-dropping scenes of Mt. Kang Toka (6294 m), picturesque valleys, and cliffs on the way. Passing by Laina Odar, Nawarpani, and Sisaul, you reach Dho Tarap, renowned for Dho Gompa, Ribo Bhumpa Gompa, right on the hill behind Dho, and Shipchaur Gompa.

From here, the path becomes more remote and rugged as you ascend to Numla Base Camp and reach the village of Danigar, passing through Numa Pass ( 5318 m). Even though you require additional stamina for this demanding adventure, you enjoy it with a feeling of achievement as you are rewarded with panoramic vistas of snow-clad mountains. After these unforgettable moments, you traverse another Bag La Pass to reach Yak Kharka, which begins with a gradual ascend through quaint settlements, rugged terrain, and alpine meadows and concludes with easier descending trails.

After spending valuable time at Yak Kharka, the most-awaited trek to Shey Phoksundo Lake starts with ascending to a higher slope, then, after descending to the Maduwa Khola, it climbs gradually to Phoksundo Lake, which is surrounded by cliffs and snow-covered peaks. Another stretch from here to Chhekpa will be a long trek with some ascents and descents. Then the last walk in the Dolpo region is to Juphal, passing through settlements such as Shyanta, Raktnag, and Kageni and reaching the Shey Phoksundo National Park Checkpoint before reaching Juphal. The next day, early in the morning, you fly to Kathmandu and depart for your homeland with a lot of incredible memories in the country of the Himalayas.

To sum up, for trekkers looking for a more genuine and off-the-beaten-trail experience, the Lower Dolpo Trek is taken as one of Nepal’s most remote and pristine treks, providing wilderness adventure with a blend of nature and culture.
