Numbur Cheese Circuit is one of the recently opened new trekking routes in Nepal. This trail takes you on a picturesque passage through two river valleys namely Khimti and Likhu valleys, which are nestled on the foothills of Everest and Rolwaling region respectively. The rich biodiversity ranging from temperate to alpine forests inhabited by wild life like Red Panda, Musk deer, Himalayan thar, Snow Leopard and various species of pheasants like Danfe. The presence of glaciers and moraines along with the spectacular vistas of the Himalayas namely Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Everest and Kanchenjunga adds to the interest of the trek. The trail also offers a close look at the life style and culture of the indigenous communities such as Sherpa, Newar, Thami, Tamang, Yolmo and Majhi.
You start the Trek from Shivalaya after driving 8 or 9 hours from Kathmandu. Here all the kinds of facilities are available like nice accommodation, Rivers side camping, and well stocked bazzar for trekking supplies. You can enjoy Cold River with cool beer and some yak cheese on the lodges. The trail route to Shivalaya from Jiri follows the traditional approach march for Everest expeditions along the trade route from Jiri – the classic Sir Edmund Hillary route.
The new route to Panch pokhari (Literally the name pancha pokhari is derived from five holy ponds which are lies there and it is new and as a special trekking area) offers visitors a superb, enjoyable and breathtaking view of majestic Himalayan peaks like Langtang, Jugal Himal, Gaurishankar and Numburchuli and many more. Walk through deep river gorges you reach to the high peaks of Bigphera Go Nup(pathibarra) and Numburchuli from where you can see the beautiful scenario of glacial lakes, Likhu Khola glacier, the terrace rice fields, subtropical forest, and Sherpa villages etc. On the way one can get chance to visit Nepal’s first cheese factory established in 1957 and the famous Thodung monastery. In March and April, rhododendrons bloom in profusion. Also you may get chance to see eagles and musk deer, Himalayan tahr, as well as a species of goat antelope. If lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard. When planning this trekking product, great cares have to take to ensure that the northern portion remained a wilderness and that lodges were not constructed: only eco-friendly campsites and trail improvements have been incorporated.
